The Cave Chauvet Bridge of Arc

18 December 1994, an essential prehistoric discovery for the patrimony of our region. Three speleologists: Eliette BRUNEL-DESCHAMPS, Jean-Marie CHAUVET and Christian HILAIRE discovered by pure chance, in the Combe of Arc (situated near the Bridge of Arc), a new decorated cave of the Paleolithic, since known under the name of Cave Chauvet Bridge Of arc. This discovery was an event saluted by all scientists. Our region has thus, one more cultural advantage negligible not that is added to splendor multiples that it offers us already.

The wealth and the exceptional quality of the painted works, therarity of the represented animals ( woolly rhinoceros , lions, aurochs, buffalos, horses, etc...), the fineness and the precision of the style using new techniques as regards the parietal art of the man of Cromagnon (blurs, perspective and movement effects) , as well as the first datings obtained by several scientific laboratories (more of 30 000 years before our era for some paints), give to the cave CHAUVET a leading place in the art of the Paleolithic over the world.

More information

For evident reasons of conservation of such a patrimony, the cave never will be opened to visitors. That is why, since the month of June 1995, an official exposition has been organized in Vallon Pont D'Arc. This exhibition of high level, prepared by the Natural History Museum of Paris, presents first the prehistoric hunters life and their cultures through 15 to 20 000 years that saw the presence of the man of Cromagnon in the Ardechian South by tables, documents..... The continuation of the exhibition is devoted more specially to the cave Chauvet. In an adapted framework one will be able to admire some photographs taken in the cave.

Before the year 2000 a museum will be created in the region by the General Council of Ardeche. The Most modern techniques (film on 360° in relief, virtual images, interactivity) will be used.
